1. What are your beliefs about how people learn
best? What is the purpose of learning theory in educational technology?
I have been working with children for about twelve years. The way people learn is how they process
information that is being taught. There
are seven learning styles that determine how people learn: Visual (spatial, Aural (auditory-musical, Verbal
(linguistic), Physical (kinesthetic), Logical (mathematical), Social
(interpersonal), and Solitary (intrapersonal).
(http://www.learning-styles-online.com/overview/) Schools are now
trying to implementing technology in all of their classrooms to support the different
learning styles.
Learning is a discipline that one person develops
and teaches on their own. Even with technology
students will have to want to have the desire to learn. I also believe that it is how the content is
being delivered. Teachers tend to teach
lessons on how they perceive students should grasp the information. Schools want more rigorous lessons that
provide higher order thinking questions.
Students who struggle in school tend fall on the downside of these rigorous
lessons.

Latisha,
ReplyDeleteI agree that students have to want to learn in order to retain anything taught to them. They have to have an interest in what they are learning also. When I have students in my class that struggle with my rigorous lessons, I will often grade them differently. When beginning a lesson, I show examples of bad work, average work, and excellent work for a project that we are doing. After I show the rubric for the project, I ask the students to look to see what is missing from the work according to the rubric. I explain how each would be graded. I encourage my struggling students as they work on the project and grade them in a way that it builds their confidence. I then ask them if next time they will try "this"(meaning something they struggled with) on their project. After a year of confidence building, they really seem to come through and do become interested in learning and being successful.
Latisha,
ReplyDeleteWell said. No matter what the learning style, there must be a willingness to learn. I think this is where being a strong motivator is a useful skill. Finding an interest to gain the students attention is a talent.

Latisha,
ReplyDeleteI do believe that technology opens the doors to providing meaningful instruction that incorporates multiple learning styles. However, in order to do this, teachers must come up with different ways to use technology. The most common use of technology in classrooms that I have observed is students getting on a computer, accessing an assigned website, and completing some sort of activity. That is beneficial to some students, but it isn't inclusive of all learning styles. Like any lesson, technology has to be thoroughly planned and thought out to maximize student learning.
Desire, that is key to learning. Well said. Without the desire to learn something it the student will not. If that initial desire is no there, the situation is not hopeless, but I do believe it is more difficult.
